Jackfield Conservation Studio and TACS are not responsible for the work which you do, the responsibility is yours and yours alone!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paint removal from glazed surfaces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paint removal from tile or glazed surfaces is a relatively straight forward process.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Nitromors\u2019\u00a0 green label, water soluble paint stripper is recognised as\u00a0 reliable for conservation use.\u00a0\u00a0 However it does have Health and Safety implications for its use in confined areas.\u00a0\u00a0 Adequate ventilation or air extraction\u00a0 should be provided, or the correct breather masks should always be used.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Safe Paint and Varnish Remover\u2019 is a non chlorinated paint stripper which is now available from conservation suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Once the paint coating has softened after the application of paint stripper, plastic spatula\u00a0 tools only should\u00a0 be used to scrape away the paint.<\/p>\n<p>Under no circumstances should wire wool, wire brushes or metal scrapers be used as they will inevitably scratch or scour the glazed surface of the tile and permanently damage the glaze.<\/p>\n<p>Paint may be left behind in the grout lines.\u00a0 Further applications of\u00a0 paint stripper should be applied, then the\u00a0 grout lines may be brushed out with a nylon or bristle scrubbing brush.<\/p>\n<p>The tiles should be thoroughly washed down with clean water after all of the paint has been removed.<\/p>\n<p>If adequate ventilation is unavailable, or the paint stripping is to take\u00a0 place in a confined or public area,\u00a0 \u2018Langlow\u2019s Peel Away\u2019 is an effective and safe substitute for \u2018Nitromors\u2019.\u00a0 It is also water based and gives off no toxic fumes.\u00a0\u00a0 However it is an alkaline substance based on Sodium Hydroxide.\u00a0 Therefore careful and thorough neutralisation, using acetic acid, of the tile work must take place after paint removal to prevent an alkaline residue forming on the surface of the tiles when dry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Copyright: Lesley Durbin Jackfield Conservation Studio Nov 2014.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div id=\"conservation\">\n<p><strong>Practical guidance on simple conservation issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 information on these pages is for guidance only\u00a0 we do not accept responsibility as a result of\u00a0 any person carrying out\u00a0 any\u00a0 works\u00a0 according to the advice contained in this web site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ellipsis\">&hellip;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tilesoc.org.uk\/tacs\/conservation\/paint-removal-glazed-surfaces\/\">Read more &#8250;<\/a><\/div>\n<p><!-- end of .read-more --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":85,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-854","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"featured_image_urls_v2":{"full":"","thumbnail":"","medium":"","medium_large":"","large":"","1536x1536":"","2048x2048":"","responsive-100":"","responsive-150":"","responsive-200":"","responsive-300":"","responsive-450":"","responsive-600":"","responsive-900":"","rpwe-thumbnail":""},"post_excerpt_stackable_v2":"<p>Practical guidance on simple conservation issues.
